North America
Author: Jan
Tourists from around the globe have found the sites and sensations of Canyon,
Texas
irresistible for years. The locals, as well as the “seasonals” never become bored by the variety of historic, cultural and scenic experiences that can be found in this
Texas
town. Canyon is a residential community that is located in the panhandle of Texas, just south of
Amarillo
. The city of Canyon got its name from the
Palo
Duro
Canyon
, which is located only twelve miles away. The largest history museum in
Texas
, The Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, calls Canyon its home. The museum contains stories of hardship, courage, victory and defeat which are told through many interpretive exhibits. There are more than three million artifacts in the museum’s collection, and shows the many groups of people that have lived in the Southern Plains during the past fourteen thousand years! And if Texas did not have enough state parks already, you can add the
Palo
Duro
Canyon
State Park
to the list.
Opened in July of 1934, the
Palo
Duro
Canyon
type w:st="on">State Park
contains over eighteen thousand acres of the scenic, northern
Palo
Duro
Canyon
. The Civilian Conservation Corp, in the 1930s, did the construction on most of the buildings and roads that can still be found being used by the park’s staff and visitors. The Canyon itself is a hundred and twenty miles long, and in some parts twenty miles wide. The maximum depth has been recorded at over eight hundred feet! Many claim that the
Palo
Duro
Canyon
is the second largest canyon found in the . The largest, of course, being the
Grand Canyon
which is two hundred and seventy-seven feet long and six thousand feet deep. The early Spanish explorers, who are believed to have discovered the area, named the canyon “Palo Duro” which is Spanish for “hard wood” in reference to the many juniper and mesquite trees that can be found here.
The closest metropolitan city to Canyon is
Amarillo
which is only about sixteen miles away. Many Canyon residents travel to
Amarillo
to see their local hockey team, the Amarillo Gorillas play against other teams around the country. Canyon is bigger than most other small towns, but with
Amarillo
so close, many residents can venture out whenever they need a bigger place.
