The town of Dyersburg, which is located in
Dyer
County
, prides itself by having many points of interest for visitors and natives alike to explore. The close by
Reelfoot
Lake
, located just about twenty-two miles north of the town of
Dyersburg
, was formed when a number of large earthquakes hit the area in 1811 and 1812. The numerous cypress trees that are seen dotting the lake protrude from the water, which give
Reelfoot
Lake
a mysterious quality that has drawn tourists from all around the world. The many people who visit the lake can see the many species of birds that seem to migrate throughout the area. Among the many species, is one of the most beautiful of all, the American bald eagle!
The American bald eagle arrives in the winter to build their nests and to wait out the cold. And, of course, there is also a vast amount of fish that any fisherman would enjoy. Apart from the many species of living creatures,
Reelfoot
Lake
also provides human creatures with the opportunity to take a bike ride, have a picnic, walk on one of the piers, or to just relax and take in the gorgeous scenery. When visiting Dyersburg, you should make an effort to stop by the Visitor’s Center, which houses a museum that depicts the history of the area and also includes examples of the wildlife that make their home at the lake. In addition to the lake, there is the
Lenox
Bridge
, which was built in the year of 1917. The bridge reflects the increasing importance of over road commerce and also pays its respects to the area’s method of transportation that was used primarily during this era – steamboats.
After sixty years, the bridge closed because the Army Corps of Engineers had to move the concrete support column. While the engineers where doing this, the Corps archaeologists found that the Lenox Bridge was the last surviving “swing span, pony Pratt through truss bridge” (I still do not know what that means.) in the entire country, which gave the bridge a historic significance. Since 1987, people from around the globe have come to see this impressive structure that residents of Dyersburg say stands as a symbol for respect, the spirit, and ingenuity. The residents also claim that this bridge has helped make
West Tennessee
a productive farming region. Tourists will most certainly find the town of
Dyersburg
a homely one, where you are able to let go and enjoy the outdoors.
