North America » United States
Author: Jan

Just off the dock from Mackinac City , is the “all natural” theme park of America . The island is limited to horse or buggy transportation because there are no cars allowed on the island. This may come to a shock to some, but one of the reasons this island is so pleasing is because of its limited way of transportation. Some prefer to bike or walk, instead of using horses, which almost seem to outnumber people. Upon stepping foot on this island, which most get here by ferry, you are immediately aware of how much this island has escaped the changes in time and the hustle and bustle that big cities possess.

The Victorian image that this island has is enhanced by the very small population of only about 500 residents that live on the island year round. Many people flock to the island during the summer months and most live in cottages that have been preserved in their original state. Mackinac Island , pronounced Mackinaw, is an ideal family vacation. The new found way of transportation makes exploring the island much more exciting. The natural and historic beauty of the Mackinac Island State Park has been named one of the ten finest in by National Geographic. Tourists enjoy the hustl

e and bustle of the downtown area which is modeled from the 1800s.

The island’s interior and lakefront perimeter path is also one of the reasons many come to the island during the summer months. Tourists are urged to stay in one of the Island ’s many cottages to get the entire beauty it has to offer. Taking a tour around the Island in a horse drawn carriage is a great way to learn about the island. Walking tours are also available for those who prefer the exercise. Parents will enjoy the educational benefits that the island has to offer by taking tour of the historic Fort Mackinac . And of course, the unique variety of restaurants and shops is an added benefit. Great food and shopping make your visit to the island all that much more fun.

And it seems that for every person, there is a fudge shop which all seem to pronounce themselves the best on the island. For a weekend getaway or a long summer vacation, Mackinac Island will cater to the needs of even the most difficult traveler. The beauty and historic presence make the island and ideal place for vacationers to get away.
