Moab-Adventure in the desert

Author: Jan

, Utah is a land of stark beauty. Known throughout the world as a bicyclists paradise, is also known as an area where there are geological features worthy of study. For example geology students from neighboring Colorado often come here to study the landforms here. There are also plenty of outdoor civilities to accommodate different tastes. For example, Arches National Park, Canyon lands National Park, And Dead Horse Park is all nearby. The area is incredibly diverse having 12,000 peak mountains and deep canyons. People come to to rock climb, raft, and four-wheel drive and to take wild life photography. The town of Moab is located in Southwestern Utah, on the Colorado River. It is only six miles from The Arches National Park and 32 miles from Canyon land Park. There are plenty of rooms available in town and if a more rustic experience is what your after, there is camping available.

When I went to , I was accompanying a group of bicyclist headed for an area called slickrock. Bicyclists from around the world who flock here annually because of the awesome terrain and the natural beauty of the area frequent this area. I don’t bicycle, but I had a great time for wheeling while the others were on the trails.

In addition I found plenty to photograph. In fact a companion and I traveled less than a mile from the town of Moab to Matheson Wetlands Preserve and got some wonderful pictures of area shore birds. These wetlands the largest on the Colorado River, in Utah, were of particular interest to me because the provide insight into a habitat that is quickly diminishing across the country. Further, the wetlands contain animals that you would not generally find in a desert such as river otters. We also got some nice pictures of Mule deer. The area also hosts a wide variety of beautiful wildflowers and desert vegetation such as princes Plume and, globe Mallow.

The terrain around is surreal, for first time visitors. The area is littered with rock formations that seem to defy gravity and defy the ordinary. For instance, rock formations like Balanced Rock; give the impression that a wisp of wind would blow it over despite evidence to the contrary. Other interesting sites include the formations that inhabit “park Avenue.

is a great place to go for outdoor enthusiasts, and for people who are interested in geology. It is important to note that the area is remote and that travelers should come prepared. It’s a good idea to wear layers of clothes to accommodate changing temperatures. Another good idea is to bring food and water for the trip. Also a good map of the area your traveling in is a good resource to have.. It is also a good idea to let members of your party know where you are planning to venture. is particularily pleasant in the early summer. By mid to late summer, the weather is hot and dry during the day and cool to cold at night.
