If you are planning travel to in the near future, be aware that a travel warning has been re-issued for this region due to a security situation occurring in the Niger Delta region. citizens considering travel to are urged to reconsider. At this time there is a considerable risk of danger to travelers in this region. A situation of lawlessness continues to prevail, in which crime is frequently committed by both criminals as well as by individuals posing in military and police uniforms.

The Delta region has become quite dangerous in the preceding months. Travel into this region should be avoided whenever possible. In early January, 2006 an American and three expatriates were kidnapped from an oilfield service vessel on the Bayelsa State coast. A series of attacks have been launched against oil company facilities over the last few months; resulting in more than twenty deaths. Threats against oil company employees and their families have been issued by a militant group, who claimed responsibility for the attacks. The group has requested that oil company personnel leave the region.

Other regions, such as Abuja and Lagos, have also seen an increase in crime. Robbery and home invasions are common in suburbs and working class neighborhoods. Even in areas which have previously been considered to be the safest of regions, such as Victoria, there has been an increase in car robberies and attempted bank robb

eries.

Further religious tension between Christian and Muslim communities in some areas have led to additional security concerns that violence might occur quickly and without warning. It should be noted that the states of Kaduna and Kano should be considered quite volatile at this time. Rival ethnic groups have experienced violent clashes in the Niger Delta region. There has been some interest expressed by al-Qaida leadership in overthrowing the government of .

Road travel should be considered especially dangerous due to robberies committed by armed gangs, particularly at night. Be aware that road travel is banned from 7:00 and 10:00 a.m. on the last Saturday of every month in order for municipal road cleanup to occur.

Domestic airliner crashes increased during the last few months. Whenever possible, try to obtain direct international flights; which may be safer.

Be on the lookout for Nigerian based advance fee fraud and scams which are meant to target foreigners. Under no circumstances, should you provide financial or account information to parties unknown to you. 

If you do plan to travel to , make sure that you obtain the most up to date health information for this region and be aware that there have been outbreaks of several tropical and contagious diseases within the region.
