You can find some of the best shopping, dining, sports, and culture in this small historic town on Oxford, Mississippi . The city is surrounded by Lafayette County , and located just about seventy miles south of Memphis, Tennessee . Oxford , as well as the surrounding areas, provides a charming abundance of tourist attractions. The city of Oxford only has 12,000 residents, but this lively, animated University town, is flowing with unique stores, art galleries, restaurants, and clubs. One of the crown jewels of the city is the fact that the University of Mississippi calls this city its home. “Ole Miss”, which is the university’s nickname, provides the townspeople of Oxford with a wide and exciting array of sporting events, art programs, academic events, and museum exhibits. The area in and around Oxford, MS is sprinkled with many parks and recreation facilities that offer outdoor activities, as well as indoor.

Keeping with the cities Southern charm, the area is involved in many cultural events for the arts and learning, bringing many speakers from around the globe to a place that has been shown to invoke a sense of greatness. Some of Oxford ’s residents claim that they originally came to the city for only a three day weekend, but have ended up staying for years! You can still feel the spirit of Nobel Prize-winning authors, William Faulkner, when walking around in the city’s town square. Other authors that call Oxford, MS home include; John Grisham, Barry Hannah, Larry Brown, and Willie Morris. Oxford has been named a Designated Retirement Community by the state of Mississippi ’s Hometown Retirement program and has also been named one of the top six retirement communities by Money magazine in 2001. During the springtime, when azaleas, dogwoods, and wisteria are abloom, Oxford celebrates fine food, crafts, and music by playing host to the Double Decker Arts Festival in downtown Square. Oxford is an ideal place to vacation at if you are looking for a quit, yet elegant spot to spend a long weekend, or if you are just passing through.
