Poconos

General Travel Tips

I had always thought of the Poconos as being a place to go either on your honeymoon, to get married or for a romantic getaway. I had no idea that it can be such a family oriented vacation spot. The biggest family attraction there, without a doubt, is the Crayola factory. It’s been a long time since I’ve played with crayons but I was seriously tempted after visiting there. Not only do they show you how they make all the different crayons and markers and chalk but you also get to play with it too. With your admission ticket, they give you three coins that you can ten spend in vending machines to redeem for a pack of modeling magic or crayons or a magic marker. There are also a ton of displays that show you all about the different types of crayons. This place is so cool and it was really interactive. The kids loved it and I have to admit that we did too. Of course, after playing with all the neat stuff (some of which I have never seen in a regular store) we really tempted to buy some of the stuff in the gift shop. They also have Crayola themed toys and clothing, too. The price to get in, for all that we got to see and do was really reasonable at just $9 per person. That’s for kids and adults over age 2; under age 2 is free.

I think they had a slight discount for seniors.

Our other favorite stop was at an animal park. It’s set in the woods so it’s really natural looking. Quick tip, be sure to pick up one of those tourist brochures that are all over the place because it has a coupon that will save you a buck off each ticket. Regular prices for adults are about $7 without it and kids prices are slightly less. The animals are in cages so you don’t have to worry about the kids. Our kids had an absolute blast. They got to feed the giraffe, assisted by a guide, which they thought was just the coolest thing ever. That is until they got to the area where they can dig for dinosaur bones. The staff keep a close eye and make sure everyone finds one. In another area they have a snake and lizard exhibit, which I could have done without. Another section is set up like the Wild West with a covered wagon and teepee. If you want to pay the additional cost, the kids can also go mining for gemstones. They have a snack bar with a limited offerings but they also have a picnic area and the whole place is fairly well shaded.
