Rail Travel: Staying on Track

General Travel Tips
Author: Jan

Rail travel is, without a doubt, still one of the best ways to experience and adventure while traveling. Not only does it provide an opportunity to view stunning scenery and landscapes but it’s a great way to let go of the pressures and stress of everyday life and relax and unwind to the tune of the wheels clicking along the track.

To make sure that you enjoy your rail travel as much as possible, there are a few things you can do to minimize potential disasters from occurring. Begin by booking your ticket well in advance. This is especially important if you plan to travel by rail during the summer or during holiday periods; the most popular times for rail travel. You can usually make your reservations by either calling a toll-free number or in some cases, you may be able to handle your reservations directly online. After handling the booking of your ticket, you generally have the option of collecting your tickets at the station or having them sent to you via mail.

Rail travel is slightly different than other kinds of travel in that you won’t have as much room to store your belongings as other types of travel. For example; when flying you can bring on small carry-on bags and check the rest of your luggage to be stored in the plane’s luggage compartment. When considering rail travel, you’ll need to keep in mind that you should pack as lightly as possible. Give careful consideration to what you plan to bring

on board with you. Suggested items include a book, blanket, pillow, earplugs or nightshade, sunglasses, flashlight, bottled water, snacks, and a pair of binoculars if you plan to take advantage of some sightseeing during your rail trip. Also make plans to bring along plenty of cash as there are usually no places along the way where you can obtain additional money.

Rail travel is normally quite safe and you will most likely experience few problems during your trip. However; it’s always a good idea to take extra precautions, just in case. With that in mind, remember to secure your luggage tightly. Also, ensure that you have put away any small belongings such as binoculars, glasses, and reading material as well as slipped your shoes back on before dozing off. This is especially important if you will be traveling at night and you have not booked a private sleeping compartment. The last thing you want is to awaken only to discover that someone has walked off with your belongings during the night.

Should you find that you enjoy rail travel, you might want to look into purchasing a rail pass. This will give you the opportunity to travel by rail more often while spending less money. Rail passes differ according to the company that issues them; however you may be able to travel an entire network throughout a one month period for under $200. Compare that to the average plane ticket and you’ll see your savings quickly add up.
