Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the nation's most spectacular national treasures. Located in the heart of Colorado, Rocky Mountain National Park has something to offer for every age and level of fitness. The park is fully accessible from two lovely and quaint Colorado towns, Estes park and Granby, and is home to one of Colorado's most famous 14,000 foot mountains, Longs Peak. The park is open year-round with each season offering something special for visitors.
For those who like to go hiking, rock climbing, or snow shoeing, Rocky Mountain National Park has plenty of trails and routes, ranging from relatively easy to very difficult. There are several wheel-chair accessible trails in addition to the regular trails. You can also take advantage of the beauty of the national park primarily through your car. There are many scenic overlooks and stops along the roads in Rocky Mountain National Park for those of you who prefer to tour the area primarily via car. Visitors who come to Rocky Mountain National Park in the spring, summer, and fall can enjoy a variety of different mountain zones, from the temperate tree-covered lower elevations to the higher alpine tundra.
One of the most famous aspects of Rocky Mountain National Park are the elk. During the fall, the elk flood the lower elevations as well as the towns of Estes Park and ename>Grand Lake. It is not uncommon to see elk herds in the middle of the main streets in Grand Lake and Estes Park during this time of year. This is the elk's mating season and many people come to the area to listen to the elk's famous bugle as he tries to attract mates.
The roads in the higher elevations close during the winter time due to heavy snow, but the lower elevations are still open to visitors. Snow shoeing is an especially popular activity in Rocky Mountain National Park as is cross country skiing. There is, however, no overnight camping available in Rocky Mountain National Park during the winter months.
The snow is mostly melted and the roads are open to the alpine areas generally by may. Overnight camping is allowed in the park again beginning on the first of March. Popular summer and fall activities in the park include rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking, backpacking, and horseback riding. You can gear up for a day in the park at the restaurants and general stores in Estes Park and Grand Lake. There are also quaint bed and breakfasts, hotels, and cabins that you can rent in these towns during your time at Rocky Mountain National Park. No matter what your interests or how you choose to view the park, there is something at Rocky Mountain National Park for everyone all through the year.
