San Marcos

North America » California
Author: Jan

We’ve traveled to San Marcos several times over the past few years and I never get tired of going there. Of course, one huge part of that could be the fact that they have absolutely one of the largest factory outlet malls in the entire country. I mean, this place is just massive. The first time we went there, which has been about ten years ago I guess, I thought the place was huge but they’ve just kept adding on year after year. Just when I think it can’t get any bigger, it just seems to keep on exploding. I think you could literally wander around the place all day and only see a fraction of the stores. I know; I’ve tried it often enough. The mall is actually not right in San Marcos. It’s out of town a few miles, heading towards San Antonio, but it’s not hard to find at all. You just take I-35 and before you know it, you see the exit sign for the Tanger outlet mall. Be sure to wear extremely comfortable shoes and bring along sunscreen and sunglasses. Also, if you get there early enough, you can get a good parking spot up close to where the little shuttle bus runs. That’s a lot better than trying to keep moving your car or walking from one section to the other.

Gruene is another great place to visit when in the area. Like the outlet mall, it’s also just outside of San Marcos, but there are lots of signs to direct the way, so it’s not hard to find either. For country music fans, it’s interesting to note that George Strait actually got his start at Gruene Hall. Anyway, it’s a great old country type town and they have a wonderful restaurant there that is a real treat.

The water park, Schlitterbahn, is a wonderful place to visit on a hot day. There are actually two parks and you have to take a free shuttle from one to the other but it’s a nice reprieve in between playing around. The best part about the park is that they will let you bring in your own food and drinks as long as you don’t bring in any alcoholic beverages or glass containers. That saves a load on the cost of eating at the concession stands. Be sure to get a locker. The cost is quite minimal and it’s worth it to have a secure place to store your stuff when you’re playing in the water.
