Think Telluride and most people just naturally think skiing and with very good reason. This is one of the most popular ski resort areas in the and one of the best. At one time, before ski bunnies hit the slopes, the areas actually served as one of the favored hideouts for train robbers and other desperadoes. Even Butch Cassidy is rumored to have hid out in these mountains. Today, the mountains are home to anyone who wants to tackle the slopes, whether skiing in the winter or hiking in the summer.
While winter is undoubtedly the most popular time to visit Telluride, you might be surprised to learn that summer can also provide you with a wonderful time in this undisturbed paradise. The roads are not nearly as dangerous to travel during the summer and you can almost completely avoid the huge crowds that overrun the area during the winter. Summer is the perfect time to get in some great hiking and enjoy the hillsides as they come alive with color in the form of various wildflowers. When it comes to hiking and climbing, one of the favorite spots in this area is Mt. etype> Wilson, boasting a 4,000 foot vertical climb.
For days that are more laid back, I found the two mile trails that lead to Bear Creek Falls to be the perfect solution. If you’re into mountain biking, this is also a good spot to hit. For a beautiful scenic bike ride or hike, be sure to the Sneffels Highline Trail. You’ll pass through some incredible meadows loaded with gorgeous wildflowers during the summer. Last time we were there we topped off our trip with a visit to Bridal Veil Falls, home of the state’s highest cascade, at 425 feet. The water cascades down to the head of a box canyon.
