We went to Israel at the end of October 1998 and came back with mixed feelings.
On the one hand it's true that Israel has some magnificent sights:
Jerusalem is a unique city, with the walls, the magnificent Tower of David-museum, the Temple Mount etc... read more

We were in Israel in October 1998, and at that time the Shekel was loosing value fast. So be careful when interpreting prices on this page, the were correct in 10/98, but if the shekel continues to loose value, there will be price rises. read more

I bought the Footprint Handbook which I thought was very good. It has more then 700 pages of very detailed info and also includes a section on the Palestinian territories and Sinai. Recommended. Their accommodation section is much bigger then the LP's, especially for the middle and upper class hotels. read more

Israel - Visa
Middle East
» Israel
All Arab countries of the Middle East, the Gulf and North Africa (except Egypt, Jordan and Morocco), as well as Iran, some African countries and a few other Muslim countries in Asia, refuse entry to travellers whose passport bears evidence of a visit to Israel. 'Evidence' means Israeli stamps of any kind (entry or exit, or visas for other countries issued in Tel Aviv), plus entry or exit stamps from the Egyptian border posts at Taba (near Eilat) and Rafah (Gaza Strip), or the Jordanian border posts at the Sheikh Hussein Bridge (near Irbid), the King Hussein Bridge (near the Dead Sea) or the Wadi Araba crossing (between Aqaba and Eilat). ISRAEL: Will *always*, at all borders and airports, stamp you in and out on a piece of paper rather than in your passport, if you ask them forcefully enough. This fact solves 99% of 'keeping Israel out of my passport' problems. Free visas issued to everybody on arrival. read more

We didn't have any problem entering the county. If you specifically state not to put a stamp in your passport, they won't do it. read more

Israel - The North
Middle East
» Israel
The North of Israel is off course an enormous area with plenty of sights. Unfortunately, we had only 1 day so we had to make a selection. We choose for Nimrod and Banyias, and we stopped for lunch in Tiberias. Apart from that there's of course Nazareth for the pilgrims among you, Bet Shean, Belvoir, Megiddo etc... We didn't visit Bet Shean and Belvoir because I thought it would be a lot of ruins. We wanted to do Megiddo but we were just too late (closes at 4 pm). These last 3 sights are on the Green Card. read more

You can either go to Coral beach (take bus or taxi). Entrance is 15 NIS, rental of material is possible (8 NIS fins, 7 NIS mask and 6 NIS snorkel). They have lockers, some are big enough for a backpack (5 NIS). The snorkelling is quite good. The coral could be better (not as good as Sulawesi f.i.) but the fish are really good. You'll see plenty of really big fish (70 cm), and they don't seem to be afraid. If you just want a beach to swim, don't come here because it's forbidden on most places in order not to damage the coral. read more
