Jordan, Middle East
Middle East
» Jordan
I went to Jordan myself in may 2004 and it was an absolutely marvellous trip, probably one of the best trips I ever made. I made this trip as a tourleader for Joker Toerisme, a Belgian travelagent offering adventurous trips, so you will see that this report is a bit different from the other reports. I can give a description of what we did, but I will not give details on practicalities and local contacts (like in the other reports).

Jordan - General Info (Part I)
Middle East
» Jordan
You can get a visa at the border or at the embassy at home, price is the same. Exception: it's not possible to get a visa at the Allenby/King Hussein border! This border also closes at 11.30 pm and reopens at 6.30 am.
You can also readily get it at the Queen Alia airport (go for rows 9 to 12).
There visa lets you stay in Jordan for 14 days. An extension will be readily given in a big police station (like in Wadi Musa) for free, and they will extend it for 3 months. The visa costs 10 JD (5/2004).

Jordan - General Info (Part II)
Middle East
» Jordan
The best travelguide to Jordan is undoubtedly the Rough Guide. It has more then 400 pages of info (compared to a bit more then 200 for LP), and it is really very reliable and detailed. The main advantage compared to LP is that it has much more info on trekkings, as this part was written by Tony Howard, the man who wrote "Walking in Jordan", the bible on trekking in Jordan.

Amman, Jordan & Around
Middle East
» Jordan
Most people arriving in Amman airport coming from Europe arrive in the middle of the night. I don't know why, but this seems to be the case in Syria as well.
There is a bankomat at Amman - airport, where you can get money with Visa and Mastercard but also with a normal Maestro bankcard! (3/2001).

Jordan - Wadi Mujib
Middle East
» Jordan
The Wadi Mujib is also called the Grand Canyon of Jordan. You can already get a good idea of the place while driving over the King's Road. A dam has been built in 2003, and this will change nature of the vally, but for the moment there's not much influence on what you see.

Jordan - Kerak & around
Middle East
» Jordan
Kerak itself is not really special. The castle is not really impressive, don't expect anything like the Crac des Chevaliers. Entrance is 1 JD.

Dana Campsites, Jordan
Middle East
» Jordan
First of all, I strongly recommend to spend a night in Rummana campsite. This campsite is excellent quality with very large tents to sleep and also bedouin style tents to eat. Their common bathroom has showers and toilets, very clean, and separated for men and women. A night there will cost around 12 JD pp. They also have breakfast, lunch and dinner. It's also possible to rent their BBQ facilities.

JETT buses leave Amman at King Hussein Street, not far from the Abdahli busstation. Another possibility is to go to Wahabat busstation and take a minibus from there to Petra .
From Aqaba they leave from the Corniche in front of the excavations of Ayla on the road to the Aqaba Hotel and the Aquamarina I hotel .
From Wadi Rum you need to take minibuses .
