There are no budget oriented travel guides for Mali itself, so you'll have to buy a bigger guide on West Africa, like the Lonely Planet or the Rough Guide. My personal favourite was the Rough Guide, but everybody has to decide for himself. Also, as long as the Rough guide did not get an update, the LP is the preferred option.

Every foreigner, except the French, needs a visa before entering the country. You can apply for a visa in Brussels at: Av. Moliere 487, 1060 Brussels Tel. 02/345.74.32 or 02/345.75.89. When leaving the country, airport tax is 10.000 CFA (11/98).

Segou... This is nothing special, so don't waste your time here. Getting to Ségou Many buses to and from Bamako charging 3.000 CFA. The big buses go faster.

Hotel Bar Mali is located on the peninsula. It's not really clean, and it has some rooms for prostitutes. The bar has a good atmosphere.
Le Campement is the most popular place among backpackers, located at the gate of the city. They charge 2500 CFA pp for a tent and 10.000 CFA for a double, but rooms are not very good.

Either by pinasse from Mopti (see general info section for details). When arriving in Kabara, a taxibrousse into town will cost 1.000 CFA.
Either by plane from Mopti.
There's also a bus once a week to Bamako taking several days.

You can also take a bus from Mopti. Including the usual breakdowns, this can take 36 hours.

We paid 8.000 CFA for a taxi into town, but it could be cheaper since we only paid 6.000 CFA in the opposite direction. Others only paid 4.000 CFA.
