Yemen is unique in the world, and has not been discovered yet by many people, with only 100.000 visitors a year. It is a great destination for anyone having some experience with travelling, although the independent traveller might be frustrated a bit by the obligation to travel to some destinations in a tourist convoy, and this implies the rent of an expensive jeep. Still, this should not deter you.

A visa has to be obtained from the Yemen embassy. You need a passport which is valid for 6 months after your application and 2 photos. Maximum stay is 1 month.

Don't expect to find many luxury hotels, except in Sana'a. In smaller towns, you often won't have much to choose off, and a little bit better can mean much more expensive. Price is often determined by the number of hotels in a given town. Electricity and water are not always available all day. Rooms are clean most of the town, matrasses are often simply on the floor. AC is often available in the south.

Al-Medina is the old part of Sana'a and will be one of the highlights of your trip. It's best to visit in the morning.
The silvermarket is on the East side of the city. There are about 40 suqs, each with its own specialty. It's a must.

There's a good road now all the way to Al-Mahwit. The region here has plenty of things to offer. It's an ideal region to do some trekkings.
A recent report said you can now only visit this region with a travel agent (12/97).

Sada is quite nice, although most people come here for the surroundings (Shihara). The city walls are well preserved, behind the Bab al Yaman you can do a walk in the city.

Suq al Dabab has a market on Sundays. the women are not veiled here, it's very colorful. You'll find camels, vegetables, fruit etc...Have your camera and telelens.

Al-Mukalla is a harbour town and has not much to offer to the traveller, most people just pass by on the way to or from Hadramaut.

The Wadi Hadramaut is of course one of the highlights of a visit to Yemen, and although it's not so easy (and also expensive) to get there, I think it's a must.
