Our trip in Java (Cianjur-Cipanas)

Asia » Indonesia

Cianjur

Introduction

Cianjur city, situated between Bogor and Bandung, is off the beaten path. Not mentionned by guide books and completely tourist free. It’s a chance to drown you into Indonesian life as it is. It’s an alternative for Bogor.

Getting there and away

- From Jakarta : Go to bus stop, right in front of Hard Rock cafe near Jl. Jaksa, take air-conditioning bus to KAMPUMG RAMBUTAN,the fare is around Rp 3000 (3 thousand rupiahs),from kampung rambutan take Bandung bus, tell the driver to get you off in Cianjur, the fare for AC bus is Rp 15.000 and for economic bus is Rp 5000. Avoid going to cianjur on the weekend as the traffic around Bogor can be horrendous, and Bandung buses don’t go past Cianjur, they take a different route on the weekend.
- To Jakarta : Buses run 24 hours, for traffic reasons ,go only during the week to Jakarta if you can help it. From Cianjur to the airport it takes about 3 ½ hours during the week. First take a white van to Bogor, the fare is rp5000 during the week and on weekend it’s RP,7000. From Bogor take the Damri airport bus to the airport ,the fare is RP,8000.
- From/to Bandung : Go to Leuwi Panjang bus terminal and take sukabumi bus tell the driver to get you off in Cianjur.Buses run 24 hours and they are very frequent.

Accommodation

There are no hotels or guesthouses in Cianjur. But there is a group of families who like to have tourists in their home. They will make your stay as comfortable as possible, cook for you and help you or join you on excursions in the nearby area. Bathroom consists of a mandi with cold water and a French toilet. Sleeping room without fan and AC.

To see

- Plastics recycle plant: Over 100 people work here, age between 12 to 70, and they recycle about 3 tons of all kinds op plastics. One of the stages in the recycling proccess is to wash the plastic after it's been sorted manually and chopped into "chips" by a big machine. The women scoop up the chips with strainers. From here, the chips are dryed, bagged, and shipped off to another factory to be melted down.
- Marriage : If you stay there for several days, there is a chance that you can visit a traditional marriage as a guest.
- Jangari floating fishing village : Located in the NE of Cianjur. A community of fishermen who live and work in huts on the lake. You can take a junk and make a drive around the several floating houses where they breed the fish. An overnight stay can be arranged.
- Gombong Remote village : it’s a 45 minutes hike to the hill off the main road. Modern convenience isn’t available not even electricity. Fire wood is used for cooking. People are self-sufficient and eat only what they grow in their farm and garden. An overnight stay can be arranged here.
- Ricefields : It’s possible to join farmers with planting or harvesting rice. It’s at the valley before the hill you have to climb up to get to the Gombong village. You can overnight at the house overlooking the small valley which is very nice.
- Tea plantation : Just out of the city borders along
the hills you can do a walk through tea plantations. Near those plantations is a nice little village with wooden houses where you can sip some tea. An overnight can be arranged.

Around Cianjur

Cibodas: It’s a high-altitude extension of the Bogor botanical garden, surrounded by thick jungle on the slopes of the twin volcanoes Mt. Gede and Mt. Pangrango. Cibodas is also the entrance to hike to the summit of mount Gede.
How to get there?
It takes one and a half hour to get there by an Angkot bus. You have to switch a few times between the busses. Short rides costs 1500 Rp, the longer ones 3000 Rp.
To do?
- The botanical garden with Telaga Biru (the lake, 15 min walk), Cibodas falls (waterfall, 60 min walk), the hot springs (180 min walk)
- Climbing Mount Gede : The height is about 2958m. Permit and registration can be obtained at the park entrance a day prior to climbing. It takes at least 12 hours to go up and back down. The hike should only be taken during dry season from may to october. Take warm clothes with you.

Cipanas

Jakarta - Cipanas

- The whole trip took 6 hours.
- The train to Bandung leaves Jakarta from Gambir station, not from Kota. You can choose between 3 classes: the middle class (Bisnis) costed 6,25 US$ (5/97). The trip took about 3 hours. Price for executive seat nowadays is 32.000 Rp (9/98).
- In Bandung station there's an official taxi boot. A taxi to the busstation costed 4 US$.
- The bus to Garut (very slow) costs 60 Cents.
- From there you can take a horse carriage for 40 cents. We let us rip off for 5000 Rp since it was our first day in Indonesia.

Hotel

Koen stayed at the nice Sumber Alam hotel where they have (quite expensive) rooms in all price ranges. We took a bungalow over the water for 75.000 Rp including breakfast. The breakfast was nothing special. They have a great swimming pool with hot water coming from the hotwater springs. In the bathroom you get the same water (5/97).

What to do?

You could do a walk to a waterfall nearby.

Koen rented a taxi who brought him to the Papandayan volcano. If you go there make sure you get there very early in the morning, after 10 am it'll get cloudy.

The volcano is very easy to get to by car, by public transport becomes more difficult.

The volcano is not that spectacular.

Kampung Naga

From there he went further to Kampung Naga which is a really very nice and photogenic little village next to a river. He liked it very much. It's touristic of course, but they managed to keep the tourism business out of the village itself.

Finally the taxi brought him to Tasikmalya where he took the bus to Pangandaran. This trip costed  100.000 Rp (5/97).
