Hama-Crac des Chevaliers
We thought Hama is a good base to visit the Crac. From the busstation in Hama we took a microbus to Homs. We had our connection straight to the Crac "Qalaat al hosn" almost immediately. People are very helpful to get you on the right bus. The whole trip from Hama to the Crac took us 90 minutes.
The way back was equally smooth.
Visiting the Crac
This is of course a fantastic sight. There will be guides offering their services, but we managed with our own guidebook which included a walk in the castle. There used to be a pub in the Crac, but that's gone.
Entry was is 300 S£ now, but this time I didn't object paying this (9/99).
Don't forget to walk around the Crac up the mountain for a great view. It's best to do this in the afternoon, the light will be better for your pictures (we did it twice). There's also a pub where you have a nice view.
Accommodation
If you have some money to spend, the
Amar Tourist Resort is a good option. To get there, follow
the road along the Crac for another 5 km. They charge 1000 S£ for a double with bathroom and small kitchen, but no fan or AC. This includes breakfast if you bargain a bit. The rooms are spacious, and they have a swimming pool. Their restaurant is excellent (8/98).
HOWEVER: a more recent report said the place was deserted, charging 2500 S£ for a double (bargained till 1500 S£), and you need a taxi to get there since it's a long walk (100 S£) (9/99).
Restaurants
There is a restaurant called La Table Ronde, but try to avoid this. Instead go to the restaurant on top of the hill: good views and good food too.
