Kayseri Turkiye

Middle East » Turkey
Author: Koen

Introduction

Kayseri is the economical capital of Cappadocia, but only few tourists visit it, and if they do, it's usually just as a transit town.

If you are waiting for your next connection further East, there are some more or less interesting sights to be seen. People are also extremely hospitable, although it's sometimes difficult to make a distinction between the friendly people and the carpet sellers who will undoubtedly approach you.

Cappadocia-Kayseri

You can go to Kayseri ether by bus or by dolmus. I would advise you to take the bus if possible, since their departure times are more reliable, and they are definitely faster and more comfortable. Dolmuses can fill up pretty slowly and can also be crowded, since they will also pick up passengers along the way even if they're full.   To get into town from the busstation, you need to take a dolmus again.

Argeus travel has a shuttle minibus between Ürgup and the airport of Kayseri. The shuttle meets all Turkish Airlines flights and costs 4,5 US$. They have an excellent website where
you can have a look at their tours at http://www.argeus.com.tr

To get away from Kayseri further east, it might be best to make a reservation, because I had to wait 2 hours because the next 2 buses were already full.

What to do

The citadel immediately attracts attention in the center of town. Actually, only the outer walls are still standing, inside is now a shopping center with plenty of carpet sellers who will be happy to show you around in their shop.

Kayseri is also known for the tombs. The most famous and best preserved is the Döner Kumbet, a 15 minutes walk out of town.

Nearbu is the Archeological museum which I didn't visit.

You could do some trekking to Mount Ercyies, if you have some info on that, let me know.
