Getting there
There are frequent buses from Maumere to Ende which will drop you in Moni.
Getting out can be more difficult since buses can be full. We hired a car to Ende for 50.000 Rp.
Accommodation
There's very cheap but basic accomodation in homestays in the center of town.
We stayed at the Flores Sare Hotel to the east of the center. It's very clean. They are still building more rooms. We paid 40.000 Rp, which is expensive for Moni, but it's the best hotel.
We first wanted to stay in the Sao Ria Wisata west on top of the hill, but this was very dirty, and their water was muddy. They were helpful getting us to the other hotel though.
Kelimutu
Getting to Kelimutu is pretty straightforward nowadays. There is a truck leaving every morning around 4 am picking up passengers in every hotel. The trip takes 1 hour.
Then you have to walk for 20 minutes to a viewing point were you see the 3 lakes.
Be careful not to fall in the craters when it's still dark !!
We liked it, but Bromo was still better. You have to go that early to see sunrise, and later the fog is coming in. You have to be a bit lucky with the weather.
We took the walk down, we hired one of the people selling coffee to guide us through the fields, passing a waterfall. The track can be slippery.
