Introduction
This report was made by
Geert Van Vaeck who went to Myanmar in October 1998. The general impression they got from their trip was "absolutely fantastic". I got a good update from
Jean Marc Delatre who spent 6 weeks there in May and June 2000.
For any remarks, updates or corrections, you can send him an
e-mail.

General tips by Hans & Greet
* Don't spend too much time in Yangoon : If you have seen the big pagode - and the swimmingpool of the Traders-hotel if it is too hot - you've seen enough. And the place to buy things is Mandalay, not Yangoon !
* For transportation, always try to travel with the busses of the Leo Express Company. You have to book at least 1 day in advance.
* The things we liked most got some *** (stars)... DO NOT MISS HSIPAW to visit Misses Rice, Mister Cook, Mister Beer, Mister Bean (!),... Not very much tourists go there, but it is worth the trip, and Hsipaw is the most funny village we ever visited ! You can walk around, visit the mar
ket, talk to the people, and don't miss a (blue ?) movie in one of the little theatres, or enjoy a tea while you see strange hilltribes (from villages where you are not allowed to go) passing by...
* We didn't visit places like the Golden Rock (one day from Bago) because a lot of people told us it was not worth going there. Make sure you can stay at least 2 full days on/around Inle lake, 2 days in Mandalay (incl. the boattrip to the temple and the trip to the bridge), 3 full days in Bagan and 3 full days in Hsipaw !!! If you want to see some beaches, be prepared for very rough and long roads (although they don't look that far away on the map of Birma) !
*Always remember : People earn maximum 10 dollars / a month in Birma !
* Accomodation : All prices for accomodation are maximumprices (We were there in december / january, the middle of the touristic season). Always ask for some discount. We know that discounts of 50 % are possible when you go in may ! We were well prepared for our trip in Birma, but it was still sometimes difficult to find a decent and clean hotel or guesthouse : In this translation, we only kept the "good" (recommended) places to sleep...
* 1 USD = 1 FEC = ??? Kyatt (we forgot).
Enjoy your trip !Hans & Greet, BelgiumHansengreet@yahoo.com

I'm interested in finding out if "Peter Geiser" is the same Peter Geiser I knew back in 1952. Did he attend P.S.179 or JHS 54 Booker T. W#ashington in Manhattan?
