Sulawesi (Sengkang)

Asia » Indonesia

How to get there ?

From UP, you should go to the bus station. We arrived at 11 am, and they told us the next bus was at 2 pm. So we decided to charter a bemo. This costed 65.000 Rp. and took us a bit more then 4 hours. First you follow the coast, and North from Barru, you go into the mountains where the scenery is beautiful.

From Rantepao you need to take a bus for UP and change at Uluale (locals call it Lowowoj).

Where to stay?

We stayed at the Al'Salam II. They have rooms with different prices. The AC room is very big and costs 65.000 Rp. The room in the front is very noisy however. Their restaurant is OK.

Hotel Apada is quite good (also used by the groups coming from UP on the way to Rantepao). They have rooms with AC and hot water for 45.000 Rp (8/98). Their restaurant is good. disadvantage is they are next to the mosque, this will guarantee you a very very early wake up call.

What to do

They have a guide who speaks 6 languages. A boattrip to the lake will cost 25.000 Rp. It takes 1 hour to get to the floating hous
es. It was raining while we were on the lake, so we didn't like it that much. In the morning it was sunny, so we took a boattrip this time only on the river and between the houses. We also went on the suspension bridge. This was a marvellous trip costing 15.000 Rp.

It' s best to see Sengkang during or right after rainy season, since the village will be flooded.

You can also visit some women busy weaving. Nothing too spectacular though (count on 15.000 Rp including driver for a 2 hour trip.
